A warm welcome to our website.
We, a group of Sri Lankan rail enthusiasts have established this site in support of
a scheme to restore a diesel electric locomotive to its former glory and running condition.
Number 560 was one of many locomotives built by Brush Bagnall at Loughborough
in the British Isles and transported to the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in the
1950s. As part of the Ceylon Government Railways (CGR) dieselisation programme,
these locomotives hauled mainline trains and were classified as Class M1. Retired
from service in 1983, no.560 stands in the yards of Dematagoda , still in fairly good
condition and with a stock of spare parts at the Ratmalana workshop.
Steam locomotives in Sri Lanka have been restored and now work special charters
hauling the "Viceroy Special".
Our plans for no. 560 are similar, and we look forward to your support to convince the
relevant authorities that this is a worthy project that will eventually bring tourist
revenue to the nation and the railways. You can find out more about this unique
locomotive and how you can play a part in its "re-birth" by clicking on the links below.
Thank you for your interest and support.
